Spring 2004

A Fond Farewell: Sabbatical Replacement Rosemary McNaughton will be heading to Massachusettes. We wish her good luck with all her future endeavors (including the upcoming birth of her first child).

Senior Talks: Senior Talks will take place during the final week of classes. The dates and times are listed on the colloquium schedule. Come hear what our students have been up to.

Spring BBQ: The students are hosting a spring BBQ on Friday, May 7 2003 beginning at 5:00pm in the Tome lobby. Don't miss it!

Feature Article: Physics and Math major Theresa Sparacio was featured in a Campus News Extra article where she discusses her math research on polygonal billiards. Check it out!

Science Dinner: The 19th Annual Student Science Research Symposium will be held in the Social Hall of the Holland Union Building on Monday, April 19. All senior physics majors will be presenting a poster of their research projects. The schedule is:
4:30 PM - Poster Session
5:30 PM - Dinner
6:30 PM - Keynote Address by David Jackson, Dept. of Physics
7:00 - 7:30 PM - Poster Session

Sigma Pi Sigma: The department of Physics and Astronomy is happy to welcome Theresa Sparacio, Jonathan Drake, Linnea Engstrom, David Jackson, JoEllen McBride, Brett McGeehan, Scott Robison, Rosemary McNaughton, and Glen Wall into Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society. The induction ceremony will take place on Monday, April 5 at 4:30 pm in the Tome 115 lecture room. The Keynote address will be given by former physics majors Bill Hanson ('80) and Joe Gaskin ('74) at approximately 5:00 pm followed by a dinner and conversation in the Stern Center.

Publication: Professor Priscilla Laws published "A Unit on Oscillations, Determinism, and Chaos for Introductory Physics Students" in the American Journal of Physics.

Sabbaticals Abound: Professors David Jackson and T. Scott Smith will be on Sabbatical leave during the Spring 2004 semester. We wish them good luck on their sabbatical projects!

Fall 2003

APS Fellow: Professor Priscilla Laws has been named a 2003 fellow in the American Physical Society. Congratulations Priscilla on this very prestigious honor!

Publication: Professor David Jackson published "Orientational Preference and Predictability in a Symmetric Arrangement of Magnetic Drops" in Physical Review E, Rapid Communications. The professional activities page lists other recent publications from the department.

Welcome Students: Welcome back students, particularly the seniors who will be spending their last year with us!

New Beginnings: Professor David Jackson and his wife Virginia are the proud parents of a new baby girl. Kyra Elise Jackson was born on August 14, weighing 8 lbs. 9 oz. and measuring 20.5 inches. Apart from a little sleep deprivation, mother and daughter (and daddy too) are doing very well.

Summer 2003

Official Welcome! The Department of Physics and Astronomy would like to welcome four new faces in the department. Kerry Browne and Lars English are beginning tenure track appointments in the department, Rosemary McNaughton is filling a one year sabbatical leave position, and Richard Greenberg will be spending his sabbatical from the University of Arizona at Dickinson College. Please join us in welcoming these newest members of our community!
