Spring 2003

Senior Talks: Senior Talks will take place during the final week of classes. The dates and times are listed on the colloquium schedule. Come hear what our students have been up to.

Spring BBQ: As a thanks to our students for all the extra effort they have put forth helping with the hiring process, the Department will be hosting a student appreciation spring BBQ on Thursday, May 1, 2003 from 4:30-7:00. Now's your chance to get some non-cafeteria food. Don't miss it! Please RSVP to Kerry Browne by Monday, April 28 so we know how much food to get.

Feature Article: Physics and Math major Liz Bouzarth along with her two advisors, Professor Hans Pfister and Professor Dave Richeson, are featured in the current issue of Dickinson Magazine. Check it out!

A Fond Farewell: After 35 years of service to Dickinson College and the department of Physics and Astronomy, Professor John Luetzelschwab will be retiring at the end of this academic year. This completes a trio of recent retirements that included Professors Ken and Priscilla Laws. On June 7, a retirement party dubbed L3 will be held in honor of Professors Laws, Laws, and Luetzelschwab.

A Warm Welcome: The department would like to welcome Kerry Browne and Lars English who will be joining the faculty as tenure-track assistant professors next year! This completes a relatively large "changing of the guard" here in the department. Within the last three years, we have seen three retirements and three new hires. While we are sad to see Ken, Priscilla, and John leave the teaching faculty, this transition has generated a lot of excitement and energy about the future of the department!

Sigma Pi Sigma: The department of Physics and Astronomy is happy to welcome Elyse Casper, Jennifer Connelly, Timothy Madden, Gina Troiano, and Greg Rydzak into Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society. The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, March 28 at 4:30 pm in the Tome 115 lecture room. The Keynote address will be given by former physics major Parke Rhoads ('99) at approximately 5:00 pm followed by a dinner and conversation in one of the HUB siderooms.

Science Dinner: The 18th Annual Student Science Research Symposium will be held in the Social Hall of the Holland Union Building on Thursday, April 10. All senior physics majors will be presenting a poster of their research projects. The schedule is:
4:30 PM - Poster Session
5:30 PM - Dinner
6:30 PM - Keynote Address by Cindy Samet, Dept. of Chemistry
7:00 - 7:30 PM - Poster Session

Sabbaticals abound: Professor Pfister will be taking a sabbatical during Fall 2003, Professor Smith will be taking a sabbatical during Spring 2004, and Professor Jackson will be taking a sabbatical during the entire 2003-2004 academic year. Congratulations and good luck to all three for a successful sabbatical.

Open House: The Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will hold a community open house on March 1, 2003 from 9:00-12:00. Click here to see highlights of this event.

Glover Award: The Department of Physics and Astronomy is proud to present the Glover Award to Professor Albert A. Bartlett from the University of Colorado in Boulder. The Glover Award Ceremony will take place on Monday, February 10 in the Stern Center at Dickinson College. A reception and dinner will be at 6:00 and the award lecture ceremony will be at 8:00. His talk will be on population growth and finite resources.

Fall 2002

We're Hiring: We will be seeking candidates to fill two tenure track positions to begin in the 2003-2004 academic year. Please visit the search page for more information.

Research Professor: Following her retirement from teaching, Professor Priscilla Laws has been appointed the rank of Research Professor where she will continue her grant funded work in physics education.

Priestley Award: Dickinson College and the Department of Physics and Astronomy proudly welcome Jocelyn Bell Burnell as this year's Priestley award winner. Dr. Bell Burnell will be on campus from Wednesday, Oct. 2 through Friday, Oct. 4 and will give a free public lecture in the ATS auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8:15pm.

Congratulations: Congratulations to senior physics and math major Liz Bouzarth on earning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Scholar Athlete award in August, 2002. In addition, she also earned one of the top national undergraduate academic honors--membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Way to go Liz! You can read more about her in this campus news extra feature article.

Record Numbers: We have a record number of students signed up for Electronics (16) and Vibrations, Waves and Optics (18). These classes should be more lively than ever. It's a great time to be a physics major!

Summer 2002

Website Overhaul: The Department of Physics web site receives a long needed face lift. David Jackson and Kerry Browne put together a completely revised web site that should be easier to navigate and hopefully is a bit more attractive than the old site.
