Spring 2008

Science Student Symposium: The Dickinson Science Student Research Symposium will be held on Wednesday, April 9. The event begins with a student poster session at 4:30 pm followed by dinner. This year's keynote address will be given by Professor Lars English.

Fulbright Award: Professor Hans Pfister has been selected to participate in the 2008 Fulbright German Studies Seminar "Science and Society: The Impact of Science on Policy Formation." Congratulations Hans!

Grant Received: Professor Lars English received an International Travel Grant Award from the American Physical Society to host Professor Alidou Mohamadou (University of Cameroon) here at Dickinson for a month. Congratulations Lars!

Grant Received: Professors David Jackson, Brett Pearson, and Hans Pfister received a $145,261 grant from the National Science Foundation under the Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program. This grant will assist the department in "Integrating Photon Quantum Mechanics Experiments into the Undergraduate Physics Curriculum." Congratulations to all!

Publication: Professor Lars English published an article titled "Synchonization of Oscillators: An Ideal Introduction to Phase Transitions" in the European Journal of Physics.

Publication: Professor Lars English and senior physics major Ritoban Basu Thakur published an article titled " Driven Intrinsic Localized Modes in a Coupled Pendulum Array" in the Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics.

Award Winner: Research Professor Priscilla Laws has been awarded the International Commission on Physics Education (ICPE) Medal for 2008 in recognition of distinguished contributions to Physics Education with far reaching international impact. Congratulations Priscilla!

Fall 2007

Publication: Professor Brett Pearson published an article titled "Wave Packet Driven Dissociation and Concerted Elimination in CH2I2" in the Journal of Chemical Physics.

Sigma Pi Sigma: On Monday, November 19, we will be inducting students into Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society. The keynote address will be given by Elizabeth Bouzarth '03, Ph.D. candidate at the University of North Carolina, followed by dinner at the Depot.

Publication: Professor Brett Pearson published an article titled "Molecular Fragmentation Driven by Ultrafast Dynamic Ionic Resonances" in the Journal of Chemical Physics.

Another New Face in the Department: Professor Brett Pearson became a father on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007. Nora Rose Flaherty arrived about about a week late and weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs. 15 oz. Mommy, Daddy, and baby are all doing fine. Congratulations Brett and Heather!

Grant Received: Research Professor Priscilla Laws has received a $249,856 grant from the National Science Foundation's CCLI program. Way to go Priscilla!

Publication: Professors Kerry Browne and David Jackson published an article titled "Simple Experiments to Help Students Understand Magnetic Phenomena" in The Physics Teacher.

Welcome Back Colloquium/BBQ: Come join your friends and colleagues at a welcome back BBQ. The colloquium will take place in Tome 115 on Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 at 4:30 pm and will be following by a BBQ in back of the building. Come one, come all!

New Face in the Department: Professor Catrina Hamilton-Drager gave birth to her first baby on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007. Olivia Marie Drager arrived about about a week early and weighed in at 6 lbs. 9 oz. Mommy, Daddy, and baby are all doing fine. Congratulations Catrina and Daniel!

Publication: Professor David Jackson published an article titled "Confined Ferrofluid Droplet in Crossed Magnetic Fields" in the European Physical Journal E: Soft Matter.

Publication: Professor Lars English and Ryan Stearrett ('07) published an article titled " Experimental Generation of Intrinsic Localized Modes in a Discrete Electrical Transmission Line" in the Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics.

Parental Leave: Professor Catrina Hamilton-Drager will be on parental leave for the Fall, 2007 semester as she prepares for the arrival of her first child. We wish her an easy delivery.

Sabbatical: Professor Lars English will be on sabbatical for the 2007-08 academic year. We wish him a productive and relaxing year.

Summer 2007

Summer School: Professor Hans Pfister is offering the first semeseter of Workshop Physics during the second session of summer school.

Publication: Professor Robert Boyle published an article titled "Solar Magnetograms at 12 μm Using the Celeste Spectrograph," in the journal Solar Physics.

A Warm Welcome: We'd like to officially welcome the newest members of the department. Professor Brett Pearson and Professor Karen Lewiswill be arriving over the summer and will begin their duties in the Fall semester. Welcome Brett and Karen!

A Fond Farewell: The Department would like to offer a fond farewell to Professor Kerry Browne and his wife Rachel Sanders who will be leaving Dickinson College. Kerry and Rachel have joined the Peace Corps where they will be teaching high school science and math in Ghana. They will be sorely missed.

Congratulations: Zachary Carson is the winner of the 2007 Landis-Mohler Prize in Physics while Ritoban Thakur and Sean Brannon have shared the 2007 Richard M. Sia Prize in Physics. Congratulations to all!
